WWJDrive Campaign Summary

Introduction

Jesus cares about what we drive. Obeying Jesus in our transportation choices is one of the great Christian obligations and opportunities of the twenty-first century. Pollution from vehicles has a major impact on human health and the rest of God's creation. It contributes significantly to the threat of global warming. Our reliance on imported oil from unstable regions threatens peace and security.

For Christians, the Lordship of Christ extends throughout every area of our life. Nothing is excluded from His Lordship. This includes our transportation choices. That is why the more specific question, "What Would Jesus Drive?," is a question that all Christians should ponder seriously.

Jesus is the Creator, and therefore pollution harms His creation. He is the Savior of world - all of the creation, and has died to redeem the entire cosmos. Jesus is our Lord and we must follow his commandment - Love your neighbor. He is the Great Physician, the healer of our bodies and souls. Jesus is the Prince of Peace and wants reconciliation of all things.

Moral Choices

Our transportation choices affect our neighbors and the world we live in. When we make choices that cause more pollution or harm, we are working against Christ.

Pollution affects our health. Asthma is on the rise, other respiratory diseases are caused and worsened by air pollution, and even plants and trees do not grow as well.

The dependence on oil for transportation is a significant factor in the unrest in the Middle East. The U.S. spends between 20 and 40 billion dollars each year to defend Middle Eastern oil resources.

Greenhouse gas emissions from the burning of fossil fuels are a major contributor to climate change. Unfortunately, much of the brunt of changes will be born by those in developing countries who can not afford to cope with an altered climate. These people are "least of these" about whom Christians are called to be concerned.

Safety of smaller, more fuel efficient cars is possible through proper design of both smaller and larger cars.

Take Action

  1. Principle One - Choose the least polluting, most fuel-efficient transportation option available for the task at hand.
  2. Principle Two - If a personal vehicle is essential, purchase the least polluting and most fuel efficient vehicle available that truly fits your needs.
  3. Principle Three - Advocate for and support policies of governments and practices of businesses that provide citizens and consumers with the most pedestrian-friendly, fuel-efficient, least polluting and safest transportation options now and in the future.

Want others to know you are committed to moral transportation choices? Sign the pledge.
